Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the gold standard for measuring manufacturing productivity. Simply put, it identifies the percentage of manufacturing time that is truly productive. An OEE score of 100% means you are manufacturing only good parts, as fast as possible, with no downtime. In the world of lean manufacturing, OEE is used as a key performance indicator (KPI) to identify losses, benchmark progress, and improve the productivity of manufacturing equipment.
How OEE is Calculated
Our OEE calculator breaks down the calculation into three measurable components: Availability, Performance, and Quality.
- Availability: This factor accounts for all events that stop planned production long enough where it makes sense to track a reason for being down (e.g., equipment failures, material shortages, and changeover time). It is calculated as the ratio of Operating Time to Planned Production Time.
- Performance: Performance accounts for anything that causes the manufacturing process to run at less than the maximum possible speed when it is running (including slow cycles and small stops). It is calculated as the ratio of Net Operating Time to Operating Time.
- Quality: Quality accounts for manufactured parts that do not meet quality standards, including parts that need rework. It is calculated as the ratio of Fully Productive Time (only good parts) to Net Operating Time.
