What is Battery Discharge Time?

Battery discharge time refers to the duration a battery can supply power to a specific load before its voltage drops below the threshold where it is considered empty. Understanding this metric is critical for sizing off-grid solar systems, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), and portable electronic devices. This calculator helps you determine how long your battery bank will last based on capacity, load, and efficiency factors.

How to Calculate Battery Run Time

The fundamental formula for calculating battery discharge time is relatively straightforward, but it requires consideration of efficiency and Depth of Discharge (DoD) to be accurate in real-world scenarios. The basic formula used by this tool is:

Time (Hours) = (Capacity (Ah) × Depth of Discharge (%) × Efficiency (%)) / Load (Amps)

If you are calculating based on Wattage, the formula incorporates voltage: Time = (Ah × Voltage × DoD × Efficiency) / Watts. By accounting for efficiency (typically 85-95%), you get a much more realistic estimate than simple theoretical calculations.

Factors Affecting Battery Longevity

Several variables impact how quickly a battery drains:

  • Battery Chemistry: Lithium-ion batteries typically allow for a higher Depth of Discharge (up to 95%) compared to Lead-Acid batteries (recommended 50%).
  • Temperature: Cold environments significantly reduce the effective capacity of most battery types.
  • Discharge Rate (Peukert's Law): For lead-acid batteries, discharging them very quickly actually reduces the total available Amp-hours.
  • Age: As batteries cycle, their internal resistance increases, leading to shorter run times over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I discharge my battery to 0%?

It is not recommended. For Lead-Acid batteries, discharging below 50% can permanently damage the cells. Lithium batteries are more resilient but usually have a BMS (Battery Management System) that cuts off power at around 5-10% to protect the battery health.

Why is my real-world runtime shorter than the calculator?

The calculator provides an estimate. In reality, wire resistance, inverter self-consumption, and Peukert's effect on lead-acid batteries at high loads can reduce the actual time you experience.
