However, calculating valve lift isn't just about looking at the camshaft specifications. Most modern overhead valve (OHV) and some overhead cam (OHC) engines utilize a rocker arm or cam follower. This component acts as a lever, multiplying the actual lift of the camshaft lobe. This multiplier is known as the Rocker Arm Ratio.

- Cam Lobe Lift: This is the measurement of the lobe height minus the base circle diameter. It represents the actual mechanical movement generated by the camshaft.
- Rocker Arm Ratio: This is the ratio of the rocker arm's leverage. Common ratios include 1.5, 1.6, or 1.7 for many domestic V8 engines.

Important Considerations: Piston-to-Valve Clearance
While increasing valve lift can improve performance, it is vital to remember physical limitations. Increasing lift brings the valve closer to the piston crown at Top Dead Center (TDC). Before installing higher ratio rocker arms or a high-lift cam, engine builders must verify "piston-to-valve clearance" to prevent catastrophic engine failure. Additionally, one must ensure the valve springs can handle the increased travel without reaching "coil bind," where the spring is fully compressed and cannot move further.
