What is Mean Piston Speed?

Mean piston speed is the average speed of a piston in an internal combustion engine as it moves from Top Dead Center (TDC) to Bottom Dead Center (BDC) and back again. Since the piston must come to a complete stop at the top and bottom of each stroke, its instantaneous speed is constantly changing. The mean piston speed provides a vital metric for engineers to understand the mechanical stress and thermal loads placed on the engine components.

How to Calculate Piston Speed

To calculate the mean piston speed, you need two primary variables: the stroke length of the engine and the rotations per minute (RPM). The formula is relatively straightforward: Mean Piston Speed = 2 * Stroke * RPM. Because the piston travels the length of the stroke twice for every full crankshaft revolution (once up and once down), we multiply by two.
