What is Mean Effective Pressure (MEP)?

Mean Effective Pressure (MEP) is a theoretical parameter used by automotive and mechanical engineers to measure the performance and efficiency of an internal combustion engine. Unlike total horsepower or torque, which are affected by the size of the engine, MEP provides a way to compare engines of different sizes and configurations on equal footing.

Essentially, MEP represents a constant theoretical pressure that, if it acted on the pistons throughout the power stroke, would produce the same net work output as actually delivered by the engine during a complete cycle. It is often referred to as "Brake Mean Effective Pressure" (BMEP) when calculated using the measured power at the crankshaft.

How to Use the MEP Calculator

Calculating BMEP requires four key pieces of data from your engine:

  • Power Output: The amount of work the engine performs, usually measured in Horsepower (hp) or Kilowatts (kW).
  • Displacement: The total volume of all cylinders in the engine, commonly measured in Liters, CCs, or Cubic Inches.
  • RPM: The rotational speed of the engine at which the power was measured.
  • Engine Type: Whether the engine is a 2-stroke or 4-stroke, as this determines how often a power stroke occurs per revolution.

Importance in Engine Tuning

BMEP is one of the most useful metrics for engine development. A high BMEP indicates that an engine is producing a lot of torque for its displacement. For example, naturally aspirated street engines typically see peak BMEP values around 150-185 PSI (10-12.7 bar), while highly turbocharged racing engines can exceed 400-500 PSI (27-34 bar).
