What is Production Line Efficiency (OEE)?

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the gold standard for measuring manufacturing productivity. It identifies the percentage of manufacturing time that is truly productive. An OEE score of 100% means you are producing only good parts, as fast as possible, with no stop time. In the world of Lean Manufacturing, tracking these metrics is vital for identifying bottlenecks and improving the bottom line.

How to Use This Calculator

To get an accurate reading of your production line, you need five key data points:

1. Shift Length: The total scheduled time for the production run.
2. Planned Downtime: Time scheduled for breaks, shift changeovers, or scheduled maintenance.
3. Ideal Cycle Time: The fastest possible time to produce one unit under perfect conditions.
4. Total Units: The total count of all units produced, including those that are defective.
5. Rejected Units: The number of units that did not meet quality standards.

Understanding the Three OEE Factors

Availability: Accounts for unplanned stops. It is calculated as the ratio of Operating Time to Planned Production Time.

Performance: Accounts for slow cycles and small stops. It compares the actual running speed against the ideal cycle time.

Quality: Accounts for manufactured units that do not meet quality standards, including units that require rework.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good OEE score? While 100% is the goal, world-class manufacturing generally targets an OEE of 85%. Most typical factories operate between 60% and 70%.

Can OEE exceed 100%? No. If your calculation exceeds 100%, it usually means the "Ideal Cycle Time" is set too high or the data entry for units produced is incorrect.
