Where C1 is the initial concentration, V1 is the volume of that stock needed, C2 is the target concentration, and V2 is the final volume of the solution. The Golden Rule: Acid into Water

When diluting concentrated acids (especially sulfuric acid), always remember the mnemonic: "Do as you oughta, add acid to water." Adding water to concentrated acid can cause a violent exothermic reaction, leading to flash boiling and acid splattering. By adding acid slowly to a larger volume of water, the heat generated is more easily dissipated.

Why is my water volume slightly off in practice?

In high-precision chemistry, adding the calculated volume of water might not exactly equal the final volume due to volume contraction. For most applications, subtracting the acid volume from the total target volume is sufficiently accurate.
