Understanding Component Material Balance

Material balance (or mass balance) is an application of the Law of Conservation of Mass to the analysis of physical systems. In chemical engineering and industrial processing, it is used to determine the quantities of materials entering, leaving, or accumulating within a system. When we focus on a specific component within a mixture, we call it a Component Material Balance.

How to Use This Calculator

This tool calculates the required output stream flow based on a steady-state process where a specific component is concentrated or diluted. To use it:

  • Enter the Total Feed Mass or Flow rate entering the system.
  • Input the Concentration (%) of your target component in the feed stream.
  • Input the Target Concentration (%) of that same component in the final product stream.
  • The tool will calculate the mass of the component, the total mass of the product stream, and the difference (usually waste or side-stream).
