How to Choose the Right Stepper Motor

Selecting the correct stepper motor for your CNC, 3D printer, or robotics project is critical for ensuring smooth movement without losing steps. The primary goal of this calculator is to determine the Holding Torque and Running Torque required to move your load under specific conditions.

Understanding the Key Parameters

Load Mass: The total weight of the object the motor is moving. In a 3D printer, this is often the print bed or the extruder assembly.

Drive Radius: If using a belt and pulley, this is the radius of the pulley. For lead screws, the calculation varies slightly, but the radius of the screw is the base measurement for torque application.

Acceleration: This is often overlooked. Moving a mass at a constant speed requires very little torque; however, starting and stopping quickly (acceleration) requires a significant burst of energy.

Safety Factor: Stepper motors lose torque as speed increases. It is industry standard to use a safety factor of 1.5 to 2.0. This ensures that even if there is slight mechanical binding or high-speed operation, the motor has enough overhead to maintain position.
