Understanding Industrial Robot Payload

In the world of industrial automation, the term payload refers to the total weight a robot arm can carry while operating at full speed and within its precision specifications. This includes everything attached after the mechanical interface (flange), such as the gripper (EOAT), sensors, mounting brackets, and the workpiece itself.

How to Calculate Total Payload

Calculating payload is more than just adding weights. While the static weight is the foundation, engineers must also consider the Center of Gravity (CoG). The further the load's center is from the robot's wrist flange, the more torque is applied to the joints. This calculator provides a preliminary look at the static load and torque. To use it, enter the mass of your gripper, the maximum mass of your workpiece, and the distance from the flange to the combined center of mass.

Static Torque and Moment of Inertia

Even if the total weight is under the robot's rated limit, the Static Torque (Force x Distance) might exceed the motor's capabilities if the load is too long or offset significantly. Furthermore, high-speed applications must account for the Moment of Inertia, which describes the resistance to rotational acceleration. If your load is wide or very long, you may need to reduce acceleration even if the weight is low.

FAQs

What is the 10% safety rule?
Many automation engineers recommend leaving a 10% to 20% safety margin of the rated payload to account for dynamic forces and to extend the lifespan of the robot's gearboxes and motors.

What happens if I exceed the payload?
Exceeding the payload can lead to motor overcurrent errors, reduced path accuracy, vibration, and premature mechanical failure of the harmonic drives or gearsets.

Does the distance affect the payload?
Yes. Most robots have a "Payload Diagram" (also known as a Load Map). As the distance from the flange increases, the allowable weight decreases proportionally to keep the torque within limits.
