By comparing the driver's intended direction (from the steering wheel angle) with the actual yaw rate, the onboard computer can apply individual brakes to keep the vehicle on its intended path.

How to Calculate Yaw Rate

For a vehicle moving in a steady-state circular path, the yaw rate (ω) is determined by the vehicle's forward speed (v) and the radius of the turn (R). The basic physics formula is:

ω = v / R

Where:

  • ω (Omega): Yaw rate in radians per second.
  • v: Tangential velocity (speed) of the vehicle.
  • R: The radius of the curve.

To convert the result from radians per second to degrees per second, you multiply the result by 180/π (approximately 57.296).
