What is Angle of Attack (AoA)?
The Angle of Attack (AoA) is a fundamental aerodynamic parameter defined as the angle between the chord line of an airfoil (or the longitudinal axis of an aircraft) and the vector representing the relative wind or the direction of flight. Unlike the pitch angle, which is referenced to the horizon, the AoA is purely aerodynamic, describing how the wing is meeting the oncoming air.
The Mathematical Formula
In basic flight dynamics, the geometric Angle of Attack (α) can be calculated using the following relationship:
α = θ - γ
Where:
- α (Alpha): Angle of Attack.
