UGC NET Age Limit Checker

Check your eligibility for JRF and Assistant Professor

Understanding UGC NET Age Limit & Eligibility

The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is a nationwide competitive examination in India used to determine eligibility for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for appointment as an Assistant Professor. While there are strict guidelines regarding the age limit for the JRF category, the rules for Assistant Professor eligibility are significantly more flexible.

UGC NET JRF Age Limit 2024-2025

For the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), the upper age limit is generally 30 years for candidates in the General/Unreserved category. This age is calculated based on a reference date usually specified in the official NTA notification (typically the first day of the month the exam is conducted). It is crucial to check the specific cycle (June or December) as the reference date changes accordingly.

Age Relaxation Rules

National Testing Agency (NTA) provides significant age relaxations to various categories to ensure equitable opportunities:

  • OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/Transgender: Up to 5 years relaxation.
  • Women Applicants: Women candidates across all categories receive a 5-year relaxation in age for JRF.
  • Research Experience: Candidates with research experience can claim relaxation equivalent to the period spent on research, up to a maximum of 5 years.
  • LLM Degree: Candidates possessing an LLM Degree are eligible for a 3-year age relaxation.
  • Armed Forces: Up to 5 years relaxation for those who have served in the armed forces.

Note: The total relaxation from all categories combined cannot exceed 5 years.

Assistant Professor Eligibility

There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for the post of Assistant Professor only. Any candidate who meets the educational qualification (Master's Degree with 55% marks, or 50% for reserved categories) can apply regardless of their age.
