Understanding UGC NET Eligibility Criteria

The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is a prestigious national-level exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for 'Assistant Professor' and 'Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) & Assistant Professor' in Indian universities and colleges. Educational Qualifications

To be eligible for the UGC NET exam, candidates must have completed their Master's degree or equivalent from a university recognized by the UGC. The minimum aggregate marks required are 55% for General/Unreserved/General-EWS candidates. However, a relaxation of 5% is provided to OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender candidates, making their requirement 50% marks.

Candidates currently in their final year of Master's degree or those awaiting results are also eligible to apply, provided they complete their degree with the required percentage within two years from the date of the NET result.

Age Limit and Relaxations

For the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), there is an upper age limit, which is typically 30 years (subject to change per specific exam cycle notifications). There is a relaxation of up to 5 years for candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender categories, as well as for women candidates across all categories.

Crucially, there is no upper age limit for candidates applying solely for the post of Assistant Professor. This allows experienced professionals and late-career switchers to enter the teaching profession at any stage of life.
